New sensor for mobile cameras.
Samsung is one of the major manufacturers of sensors for mobile cameras. The company's assortment includes 48 MP, 64 MP and even 108 MP sensors. Moreover, Samsung even plans to develop a 600 MP sensor.
But so far the company has presented a new 50 MP ISOCELL GN1 module. The size of the sensor is 1 / 1.31 inches, the pixels are 1.2 micrometers (whereas most other sensors with a higher resolution have a pixel size of 0.8 micrometers). This should improve the quality of shooting in low light conditions, because larger pixels can catch more light.
However, ISOCELL GN1 supports Tetracell technology (combining four pixels into one). Photos are obtained equivalent to a resolution of 12.5 MP with a pixel size of 2.4 micrometers. For comparison, Samsung's 48 MP sensor is capable of taking 12 MP images with a pixel size of 1.6 micrometers.
ISOCELL GN1 also supports Dual Pixel, Smart-ISO, HDR (real-time) technologies, is capable of taking photos with a maximum resolution of up to 100 MP, recording 8K video at 30 fps, Full HD / 400fps (without autofocus) and Full HD / 240fps (with autofocus). In addition, Samsung focuses on the fact that the autofocus response speed corresponds to the level of DSLR cameras.
The mass production of the ISOCELL GN1 module starts this month. So we can expect the first smartphones equipped with this sensor to appear on the market in the second half of 2020.
