The largest electronics exhibition this year will not take place.
According to the publication Bloomberg, John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA (organizer of the MWC exhibition), stated in an email that the event was “impossible” due to the threat of coronavirus. By the way, the cancellation of the exhibition is the first in its 33-year history.
I note that this news is not surprising, because in recent weeks a number of companies have refused to participate in MWC 2020, including Amazon, Intel, Facebook, LG, Nokia, NVIDIA, Sony and many others. Therefore, the feasibility of the event was called into question.
It is not yet clear who will compensate for losses due to the cancellation of the exhibition – the participants or the organizer. Typically, companies spend tens of millions of dollars on this event. In any case, the absence of MWC this year will redraw the plans of many manufacturers, because a number of high-profile announcements were expected at the exhibition. So now we are waiting for a large number of our own presentations from companies.
