Qualcomm held a special event yesterday, which presented the chipsets that will be installed in top-end devices in 2020.
In total, three chipsets were presented: the flagship Snapdragon 865, Snapdragon 765 and its gaming version – Snapdragon 765G. Technical details about the chips will be provided a little later, while the company notes that they all became more productive, and also support 5G technology.
It is proposed to use the Snapdragon 865 with the second-generation Snapdragon X55 modem (5G is not directly integrated into the chip itself). Smartphone manufacturers will not be able to use the chipset with another modem (which, for example, only supports 4G). But interestingly, Qualcomm has fully integrated 5G into mid-range chips – the Snapdragon 765 / 765G. This means that next year we will get not only flagship smartphones with 5G.
By the way, some smartphone manufacturers have already announced their devices on new chipsets. In particular, Xiaomi Mi 10 and the unnamed flagship Oppo, scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2020, will be equipped with Snapdragon 865. At the same time, Nokia has confirmed the use of Snapdragon 765 in its future devices. Motorola, in turn, plans to equip its smartphones with both the Snapdragon 865 and 765.
In addition, Qualcomm showed a new ultrasonic 3D Sonic Max sensor, which should significantly improve the operation of fingerprint scanners integrated into the display.
