Samsung this year quite radically changed the design of its smart watches. At the beginning of the year, the Galaxy Watch Active was introduced, which lost its branded rotary bezel and was slightly inferior to the older Galaxy Watch in terms of functionality. And after six months, the company presented the second generation of Watch Active, which received not only the missing functions, but also a bezel, even if it is touch-sensitive. A bit of a strange strategy, but oh well, today we will see what new Galaxy Watch Active 2 can offer us.

The appearance of smart watches has not changed. Minimalistic design, without unnecessary elements. There are still two buttons on the right side (the “Back” button is now oval), and a speaker appeared on the left, so the second generation received support for voice calls. A convenient feature that was lacking in the first Galaxy Watch Active. The watch is available in a case made of aluminum or stainless steel, in silver, black or gold colors.

A silicone strap is included with the aluminum version; a leather strap is provided for stainless steel. The straps are 20 mm wide, they are, as usual, replaceable, so it will not be difficult to update them over time. However, the complete options are high-quality and pleasant to the touch.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 is available in two sizes: 40 mm and 44 mm with 1.2 ”and 1.4” Super AMOLED displays, respectively. In our case, both models are 40 mm, on a man’s hand they look good, but for myself I would look for a variant of 44 mm. The resolution of the display, as before, is 360×360 pixels, which is enough for a nice picture.

One of the main differences between the Galaxy Watch Active 2 from the first generation was the presence of a touch bezel. It can be activated in the watch settings, or disabled if you do not like this option for interaction. As for me, it’s quite convenient, at first the sensitivity of the bezel may seem excessive and it will throw you back and forth on the home screen widgets, but you get used to it pretty quickly.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 are running the Tizen operating system. There are practically no differences from previous versions. The watch has new dials, animations have been updated, motivating you not to sit in one place for a long time, but in general, the interface is familiar and familiar from the previous hours of the company. For those who have been choosing dials for their clothing style for a long time, My Style watch interface is provided. It allows you to take your photo, then indicate the main color of your image, after which the watch will generate several dials in a similar color scheme. By the way, in future updates, the watch will receive YouTube, Twitter and Google Translate applications. And if the tweet feed can still and will be conveniently scrolled on the screen, and to translate the text it will be enough to dictate it, then watch YouTube … in general, it will be interesting to try.

I also note the close integration of smart watches with Samsung smartphones. For example, if you turn on the Do Not Disturb mode on the Galaxy Note 10, it will automatically activate on the watch. Also, using the Galaxy Watch Active 2, you can control the camera of the smartphone. The Galaxy Wearables application has also been slightly redesigned, the interface of which has become more convenient and thoughtful.

A set of sports features suitable for most users. The watch allows you to track more than 39 types of workouts, seven of which are activated automatically – running, swimming, walking, cycling and others. The updated Running Coach feature allows you to determine the running speed in real time and choose any of seven programs for classes. Samsung notes that the Galaxy Watch Active 2 uses updated sensors, which are even faster able to read data. And this, in turn, helps to better control their performance during training. By the way, soon, in addition to reading the pulse, users will also be able to do an ECG with the help of a clock.

Exynos 9110 dual-core processor is responsible for the watch’s performance. 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory. There are Wi-Fi 4, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC modules. True, contactless payments are only supported through the Samsung Pay system. Versions with an LTE modem are optionally available. The device case is protected against moisture and dust according to IP68 and MIL-STD-810G standards.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 supports WPC wireless charging. A compact charger is provided for them. By the way, you can also charge the gadget from smartphones, in particular from Galaxy Note 10. For this, you need to enable the Wireless PowerShare function in the quick settings curtain. With regard to autonomy, a large version of the watch is equipped with a 340 mAh battery, the smaller – 247 mAh. You can count on about 2-3 days of work, a completely normal indicator for smart watches.

In the end, Samsung's smartwatch continues to be the best option for Android smartphones. And if you liked the design of the Galaxy Watch Active, but it was embarrassing for the lack of some functions, compared with the older Galaxy Watch, then the second generation fixed all the flaws, moreover, it brought some new chips. Moreover, the watch is now available in two sizes, so it is suitable for both the fragile female forearm and the massive male. The cost of Galaxy Watch Active 2 starts at around 9 thousand UAH. The 44 mm version will cost from 10 thousand UAH. Of the competitors, they, perhaps, only previous Samsung models. Only 5th generation Apple Watch can shoot ECGs, but they do not work with Android. If you want support for Google services, for the same price there are options on Wear OS, but you have to put up with autonomy in just one day.
