If we think that the File Explorer built into the system is sufficient for us, let’s check whether it is worth changing it. And if we use our favorite file manager – make sure that we don’t find a better program in this list.
With the development of technology, our computers have more and more possibilities of storing various types of files, directories and volumes, which turns out to be necessary when you need to save many documents structurally segregated on the device’s hard disk. Each of us stores a lot of valuable information in the computer’s memory, in which it is easy to get lost at some point. Choosing to manually clean your computer or sort files of various types can be tedious and time consuming. That is why from effective data segregation we have advanced programs – file managers – that most of the activities related to the classification, division and attributeing of folders do for us. For a good organization of documents saved on your computer’s hard drive, you will need something more than just a File Explorer built into the system, whose functions, compared to external file managers, are somewhat limited. Often, such programs are equipped with additional capabilities, such as connecting to other computers, volume mapping, managing access rights or editing file contents, and even support for FTP servers. That’s why it’s worth having a file manager on hand who will imperceptibly organize our documents, doing all the work for us. Meet the best programs in this category.
Total Commander – the best file manager
It is a two-panel file manager that has been distributed under the name Windows Commander for almost a decade. It is one of the most popular programs in its category, due to the extensive capabilities, far exceeding those that we know from File Explorer. All these features are wrapped in an accessible and simple user interface, thanks to which Total Commander is used by thousands of people around the world. In addition to standard capabilities, such as copying, quick search or sorting folders, the file management program has additional options, such as merging and splitting files, verifying CRC checksums and comparing documents. What’s more, Total Commander can be successfully used as an FTP client and serve as a kind of intermediary to transfer content to the server. Another useful feature is the ability to transfer files between two computers using a USB cable.
Multi Commander – with it you will bring perfect order
Another suggestion is a program that will definitely replace Windows Explorer, and even compete with the above-mentioned Total Commander. It has all the features that we can expect from a good file manager, and in addition is completely free. In addition to the daily functions on files, such as copying or renaming folders, Multi Commander is also a tool for specialized file search, and also has the function of calculating and checking checksums, managing archived data (ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR) and, as predecessor, supports FTP servers. What’s more, we can also edit the Windows registry from the user panel. Multi Commander has personalization options, giving us the option of setting, among others skins and keyboard shortcuts.
Q-Dir – simultaneous work in up to four panels
It is a free file management program that differs from its predecessors by the ability to work simultaneously not on two panels, but as many as four, each of which has access to exactly the same functions. Simultaneously, therefore, we can open four locations and perform actions on files even faster and more efficiently. Interestingly, each of the panels can display the content in a different way, thanks to which we will adapt the catalog view to what is in it. It is very convenient while working on graphic and text files. Q-Dir will also contain other useful mechanisms, such as assigning colors to file extensions or advanced hard disk content filtering.
Unreal Commander – a free tool that supports Total Commander plugins
Another proposition with two-panel interface support is Unreal Commander, a free file management program. It has standard functions for sorting, viewing, editing, copying, moving, deleting or creating new folders using keyboard shortcuts, so that each document will find its place in the thicket of folders lost on the hard disk. Like Total Commander, the program has the ability to view packed archives and includes a built-in client for file transfers between the computer and the FTP server. One of the key advantages of Unreal Commander is support for plugins created for Total Commander. The tool allows you to rename many files at once after defining the naming pattern, and another function helps you quickly calculate the size of subdirectories.
Directory Opus – many possibilities closed in a small program
Directory Opus will allow us to choose which interface model is most convenient for us – one-panel, known to users from Windows Explorer, or two-panel, reminiscent of that in Total Commander. This free program has been equipped with a multimedia file browser, FTP client and packed archive support. Its interface looks confusingly similar to windows known to us from the Windows platform, so Directory Opus support will not differ much as it has built-in system tools. The software user panel includes a tree view and two screens, thanks to which computer navigation is facilitated and it allows to switch from one to two panel options. In addition, we can connect to a network drive, set labels, enter file descriptions, create and organize a list of favorite folders and address book, create archives and extract content from a compressed file.
