According to cyber security experts, the question is not whether, but how the hackers will interfere in the May elections to the European Parliament. We are to elect new MEPs on May 26. FireEye data shows that the targets of criminals are the ministries of defense and foreign affairs of many countries.

Hacker

The first news that hackers will want to interfere in the result of the elections to the EP appeared at the end of February. Microsoft then announced that it had discovered an attack on more than a hundred e-mail addresses belonging to European non-governmental organizations dealing with Internet security, nuclear weapons policy and foreign affairs. The American company did not blame the attack directly on any country, but identified the attackers as a hacker group called Fancy Bear, sometimes appearing under the names APT28, Sofaca or STRONTIUM. This is an organization that many specialist companies consider to be the arm of Russian intelligence. This sentence, apart from Microsoft itself, was also expressed by CrowdStrike and FireEye.

FireEye boss Ben Read in an interview with the Financial Times confirmed that over the past six months the company has noticed extensive campaigns targeting European media as well as government centers. The attacks primarily focused on the ministries of defense and foreign affairs of countries that are members of NATO.

Attacks on mailboxes were the weapons used during the last presidential elections in the USA or France. During the last year’s referendum in Macedonia, attempts were made to influence the voting result by paying protests and organizing Internet campaigns that discouraged participation.
