Since mid-January, quite loud on the web is about a ransomware called BigBobRoss. Before we go to the description of the problem, as well as the software, it is worth to first explain the term “ransomware”, because probably not everyone has met with this before.
According to Wikipedia, this is a type of malware in the field of cryptovirology, which blocks access to the computer system or prevents the reading of data stored in it (often through encryption techniques), and then demands money from the victim for restoring the original state. So here we are talking about one of the most dangerous types of attacks used by hackers.
At the beginning of this year there were dozens of requests from users from six countries who fell victim to this type of software. Most of their data was encrypted and the “Read Me.txt” file appeared on the computer. After opening it, the content appeared on the screenshot below. Hackers have included in it a way to decrypt data, which is of course to pay money to recover files (payment in bitcoins).
It is not known exactly how the BigBobRoss team works to spread malware or infect victims. It is known only that it happens suddenly, but the detailed process is currently being investigated. Despite this, Avast and Emsisoft decided to prepare a special program enabling the decryption of blocked files without paying a ransom. Download BigBobRoss Decrypter here.
It is very good information that AVAST decided to create an application especially for those dozens of people who after seeing windows systems saw a rather uninteresting message. The program can be downloaded from the official Avast website, so if you want to protect yourself in the event of a potential attack, it is good to have an up-to-date antivirus installed on your system, if you do not already have an antivirus, check the list of the best antiviruses as soon as possible and install it.
